Great Games I’ve Covered

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010
by far the most exciting game I’ve ever covered was back in the 70’s and I don’t even remember who won…it was a college game between Chadron State and South Dakota Tech at Goodell Gym in Rapid City.  a battle between the twin brother coaches, Larry Riley of Chadron and Mike Riley of Tech who I think are both still in the NBA as scouts.  it went four overtimes and I just remember three hours of basketball and the two twins hugging at mid court after the game.

the biggest upset I ever covered was number one ranked and something like 17 and 1 Rapid City Stevens playing Rapid City Central in the old Section 7A championship game in 78.   after losing to Stevens twice in the season Central, a 500 club, was, as usual, primed for tournament time under veteran coach Dave Strain won on a last second shot by now Central assistant coach Bill Anderson knocking the stunned Raiders out of the state tournament, (no play back games in those days)…Stevens was so upset they didn’t even come out for their second place awards.

also, the 1970 Nebraska State A championship game won by Lincoln East on a last second desperation 55 foot heave on a back court pass in…the player took it one handed in one motion and passed it to the basket.  I think it is on u-tube.

and, of course, the infamous Roosevelt win over RC Central ( I think ) in 2000 or so on the tip of the pass in under the Central basket that went up in the air and fell in for the Roosevelt win.

Random early thoughts

How about those top ranked  Mitchell Kernels of Gary Munsen…the discipline shows through again…in a win over number 2 Rapid City Central Friday night.  The discipline even shows through in the Rapid City Journal game story by Padraic Duffy.
Who is the first statement from?  Not some player but the coach himself.  Way too often now we find quotes from players in high school games even before and rather than from the coach.  In my opinion, this should not be.  I would rather hear from Roosevelt’s new coach first, Cody Larson second…from Huron’s coach first, Newton second.  I saw this violation of writers and coaches discipline in two of the state’s major papers already this week.  What do you think?  Disciplined teams win regularly in the big games…like Mitchell…no real stars, just good team play.   Rapid City Central is good…and will get better.  I think they too have the discipline.  Not sure about some of the others.
